52 Fridays is an ongoing series for equestrian professionals and equine business owners and managers, with marketing and public relations stories, ideas, tips, and resources shared here each Friday.

No Biz Like Horsebiz was down for the count last week, but this week we’re back in the saddle and rarin’ to go! Good thing, too, since where the #&@% did January get to?!

The 2012 Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs) are underway, and if you’re responsible for your horsebiz marketing, social media, or community management you’ll want to check them out. Even if you have zero interest in winning your own ESMA (and sorry, there’s no little gold statue for your mantelpiece), what you’ll get is infinitely more valuable…a look at what’s happening in the equestrian world in terms of social media trends, an opportunity to learn from the horsefolk that are modeling the very best in social media ethics and practices, and some ideas for how you can harness social media for your own marketing success.

It really does seem that a Thoroughbred named after an Australian gangster is a living, breathing, eventing miracle. He’s looking like a possible Olympian for the London 2012 games, and has just scooped up Horse of the Year honors despite having nearly died in a 2011 barn fire.

The New York Times ran a story this week about the chestnut gelding named Neville Bardos; the article is a great example of high-profile mainstream media coverage of the horsebiz, and a great PR coup for Neville’s team.

52 Fridays – #52 How Many Of Your Horsebiz Goals Did You Achieve Last Year? Did You Write Them Down?

52 Fridays is a year-long series for equestrian professionals and equine business owners and managers, with marketing and public relations information, ideas, tips, & resources shared here on Fridays throughout 2011.

Each New Year typically brings a media frenzy on the topic of goals and resolutions. However, about the time the celebratory confetti hits the garbage can, resolutions meet up with the light of day and most people simply don’t follow through.

It’s hard work to make a goal reality. But when the rubber hits the road and the going gets tough, are you able to power through and achieve your horsebiz goals, or do you get sidetracked by to-do lists or daily dramas? Here’s what to do about it.

Although the Rolling Stones famously wrote that ‘you can’t always get what you want,’ you stand a much better chance of getting it when you ask for what you want. In marketing terms, that’s the ‘call to action.’ Is your horsebiz using them?

52 Fridays – #50 Why Focusing On Personal Strengths Can Jumpstart Your Horsebiz

52 Fridays is a year-long series for equestrian professionals and equine business owners and managers, with marketing and public relations information, ideas, tips, & resources shared here each Friday throughout 2011.

This month I pulled from my shelf a book I’ve had for years and have been meaning to revisit for some time. After a bit of browsing, I thought it was worthwhile to share Now, Discover Your Strengths with you as a 52 Fridays resource.

As this book points out, the concept of focusing on and developing your strengths and talents is one that often gets sidelined in favor of spending time on overcoming weaknesses. However, I believe that if you can focus primarily on strengths and get the weak spots outsourced, both life and work can get that much more fulfilling. It’s an approach that’s already in use within the horse industry, and one that you can adopt for your own horsebiz marketing success.

52 Fridays – #49 Innovate Or Die? Why Horsebiz Change Is Natural, And Needed

52 Fridays is a year-long series for equestrian professionals and equine business owners and managers, with marketing and public relations information, ideas, tips, & resources shared here each Friday throughout 2011.

A recent show I saw on the Science Channel made an interesting point about ‘survival innovations’ by the human race in the face of Earth’s natural (and sometimes sudden) cycles of climate change. These conceived adaptations have been in response to externally imposed circumstances, but have given us the world we know today, including agriculture, science, art, and all the conveniences of modern life.

I think we forget that the horse world is also one subject to change and innovation. Many say ‘we have to use this tack/gear/hat/clothing because it’s always been that way.’ But really, it hasn’t. So when it comes to horsebiz, doesn’t it make sense to embrace change in response to changes in the world around us, rather than resist it? For some examples of the good that can come from embracing change, here are some equestrian adaptations that weren’t in existence even a few years ago.

52 Fridays – #48 Use Your Horsebiz Vision Statement To Pull You Forward

52 Fridays is a year-long series for equestrian professionals and equine business owners and managers, with marketing and public relations information, ideas, tips, & resources shared here each Friday throughout 2011.

When I came up with the idea of 52 Fridays after my November 2010 horse expo presentation, I wanted to do the series as a way to continue my mission of helping equine businesses be more successful through improved marketing efforts. Many things have changed since I first started writing about horse industry marketing in early 2005 (yikes, how does SEVEN years go by so quickly?!), but one thing is still the same – my vision. As we reach the end of the year, here are a few thoughts about using your vision to pull you forward, even when you face challenges and have days when you feel like giving up.
