AHP supports ‘new blood’ coming into the industry through their Internship program, and via their annual Student Award Contest. The 2012 contest deadline is in two weeks…do you know any top-notch students considering equestrian publishing or journalism as a career? Then tell them about this contest!
The competition for this contest is pretty steep, but the winner gets some great prizes:
- Paid travel (up to $750) and conference fee for the AHP Annual Seminar that year – basically a three day ‘crash course’ in equine publishing and media, with great networking for future jobs and career opportunities
- A cash award of $1,000 provided by Publishers Press, plus an all-expenses-paid trip to their Louisville, Ky., facility to learn the printing process from the insider’s viewpoint
- A great bullet point on their resume
AHP expanded the prize list a few years ago to offer up to THREE travel awards of $750 each so that more students could attend the seminar, but there is still only one winner who receives the Publishers Press trip. That’s something I drool over every year, I’d love to have that opportunity! All the student winners also get public recognition on their accomplishment and support from industry members.
However, there are no losers when it comes to this contest; every qualified applicant receives a complimentary AHP membership for the year, a comp student certificate for seminar registration, and a resume review to help improve their chances of landing an equine media job after high school or college. How does it get better than that?
The AHP Seminar is held in June of each year in great horsey locations such as Lexington, Saratoga, Santa Fe, and Orlando. OK, that last one was more Disney than horsey, but I’ve found these annual conferences to provide great networking and information for those of us in equine media and related businesses.
In 2012, the seminar location is Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, from May 31st to June 2nd. The deadline is January 16, 2012. Give your favorite student a heads up today, so they can pull together their entry and have their best chance to win! Guidelines and an application (both PDF and Word versions) are available here; use the Share button below to share this news via email, Facebook, Twitter, or other social media.
Because it’s not up yet on the AHP website at the time of this post, I’ve included the full news release text below:
